AMERICA HAS ONE OF THE RICHEST CRICKETING HISTORIES OF ANY COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD, DATING BACK OVER 300 YEARS

Baseball may be thought of as an American sport with a long and illustrious history, but cricket actually predates it. In fact, cricket was being played here before it became the United States, and historical records as early as 1709 have chronicled its existence.

1709

William Byrd, owner of the Westover Plantation in Virginia, noted in his diary for 6 May 1709: “I rose about 6 o’clock and Colonel Ludwell, Nat Harrison, Mr. Edwards and myself played at cricket, and I won a bit.” Read more

The first public report of a cricket match in North America, when the New York Gazette and the Weekly Post Boy carried an account of a match between a London "eleven" and one from New York City. Read more

Benjamin Franklin brought back from England a copy of the 1744 Laws, cricket’s official rule book. Read more

There is anecdotal evidence that George Washington's troops played what they called "wickets" at Valley Forge in the summer Read more

USA reach the final of the Plate in the 1994 ICC Trophy held in Kenya having been knocked out of the group stages due to a narrow 3 wicket defeat to Bangladesh. Read more

In September of 1999 Woodley Park in Los Angeles played host to a series of five 50 over games between Australia A and India A. Australia won the series 5 nil and featured the likes of Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Damian Martyn, and Andrew Symonds. India A featured Virender Sehwag, VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh and Ashish Nehra. The USA completed a best ever 6th place finish at the ICC Trophy held in Canada, narrowly missing out on a place in the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup Read more

The USA participated in the ICC Champions Trophy after winning the ICC Six Nations Tournament Read more

2006

USA qualified for the 2006 U19 World Cup in Sri Lanka by virtue of winning the ICC Americas U19 Championship in 2005. They were knocked out by New Zealand in the Plate Championship Semi-Final, Pakistan were the tournament champions. Read more

USA participate in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier for the first time and despite a big win in their opening match, they come up short of the 'Super 4' stage of the tournament that is hosted in the UAE. Read more

USA competed in the U19 World Cup for a second time in 2010, this time the host country was New Zealand. They beat Afghanistan in their final match of the tournament to finish 15th out of 16 teams. Read more

2011

USA Women compete in the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifier for the first time and despite a thrilling 1 run win over Zimbabwe, they fail to qualify from the group stages of the event in Bangladesh. Read more

2012

Two wins from seven matches including a huge win over Scotland saw USA not advance in the 2012 edition in the UAE as they lost their ranking play-off match to finish in 12th place overall. Read more

2013

Despite a win over Canada in their opening match at Abu Dhabi, USA finish bottom of their pool in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2013. Read more

2015

Wins over Jersey, Hong Kong and Papua New Guinea were not quite enough to take USA closer to their first ever appearance at the ICC World Twenty20 although they missed out on the playoffs by just 1 point in Ireland. Read more

USA Players get picked up in the Caribbean Player League draft for the first time as part of a partnership with ICC Americas. Several players including batsman Steven Taylor make their debut in the league. Read more
